The 2019 Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate Waris Dirie Landed in Korea

Waris Dirie, World-recognized human rights pioneer in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM), arrived in Korea on February 6th. During her interview with Korea’s top news medias and magazines,
she stated that she is honored to be awarded for the 2019 Sunhak Peace Prize and she is very excited to experience life and culture of Korea.
The 2019 Sunhak Peace Prize Award Ceremony  will be convened on Saturday, February 9th, 10 AM, at the Lottel Hotel World in Seoul, South Korea.

At the Award Ceremony, over 1,000 guests, including 100 current and former presidents, representatives and leaders, will gather to celebrate this precious moment.
Waris Dirie was born in a nomad family in Somalia. After experiencing many challenges, she was blessed to become a world-class supermodel in 1990.
After, she travelled around the world to walk on many fashion shows and she glazed the covers of famous magazines, such as Channel, Revlon and Levi’s.
When her career was at its peak, she revealed her experience with FGM and became anti-FGM activist.

Through her great devotion, worldwide resolution on banning FGM has passed and worldwide awareness has greatly increased as a human rights issue.
Moreover, for last two decades, the percentage of regions practicing FGM has greatly decreased in the world.
Recently, she is devoting herself to decrease the rate of illiteracy in Africa by building schools in Sierra Leone, which has one of the high percentages of FGM being practiced, and also to educate girls as a fundamental solution to completely eradicate FGM and to improve rights of women and girls.
