Sakena Yacoobi

Sakena Yacoobi founded the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) and provided education and vocational training to 13 million refugees.

Her efforts have greatly contributed to the advancement of Muslim women’s rights and social status. In recognition of her achievements, she became the Sunhak Peace Prize laureate in 2017.

Despite the dangers posed by the Taliban regime, Dr. Yacoobi educated more than 3,000 girls through more than 80 underground schools.

Unlike the first generations of Afghan refugees, whose pioneering efforts were devastated by despair and poverty, the second and third generation refugees emerged as leaders in their communities, playing a vital role in rebuilding their nation.
