President Macky Sall highlighted the major events that handicap Africa in its development, during a trip to Morocco as part of the Forum Medays (Tangier 13-16 November).
The words of the Senegalese president were reported Wednesday evening in a statement following the awarding of the grand prize to President Macky Sall in the 2019 Medays Forum.
“Africa is vast: more than 30 million ㎢! It is rich in water resources, land, mining and energy,” noted the Senegalese president before continuing: “It is rather the unequal exchange and unfair world order that contribute to impoverish it by curbing its development efforts.”
Poverty is dehumanizing and makes the social contract precarious, fueling the frustration and despair that is the bedrock of radicalism of all kinds,” he said.
The winner of the Medays 2019 Award considered it urgent to “reform global political and economic governance to reflect the realities of the 21st century”.
Called to rule after receiving the distinction, Sall urged the move to action.
“Between states, inequalities persist. We must not give in to the civilization hegemony or the anxiety of the present or to the fear of tomorrow, at the risk of not acting,” said the Senegalese president who succeeds his Burkinabe counterpart Roch Marc Kaboré, winner of the 2018 edition.
The 12th edition of the Medays Forum took place from 13 to 16 November on the theme ”Global Confidence Crisis: Dealing with Uncertainty and Subversion”.
More than 200 speakers from 80 countries participate in debates on key angles of reflection and exchange around regional and continental integration and the context of the global economy, among others.
The MEDays Prizes are awarded to personalities, institutions, organizations or companies, having made a decisive contribution to the development of the countries of the South, or having had a real added value in the improvement of North-South or South-South relations.
