Scientists predict that Kiribati, a small island nation in the South Pacific, will submerge by 2050. Kiribati is one of the world’s least greenhouse gas emitters, but it is said to become the first country in the world to disappear into the water.
Ban Ki-moon, the 2020 Sunhak Peace Prize laureate who visited Kiribati in 2011 to promote climate change solutions said,
“I met a boy when I visited Kiribati. The boy was terrified of being swept away by the waters while sleeping at night. Climate change is a serious threat to the survival of low-lying coastal countries. We need to protect our world so that children and our grandchildren do not have to wonder why the adults could have been so irresponsible. Our only option is to act now.”
