Q: How is the fish very important to Kiribati?
A: It’s about survival.
We don’t have a lot in terms of land resources. We just have coconuts. Maybe some grapefruits. We have taro, but it requires a lot of work.
So, much of our livelihood is based on marine resources. So, it’s important that we look after it. And I think it’s important that what happens on the other side of the world does not affect it. And at the moment, with the carbon dioxide emissions, there has been increasing acidification of the ocean. That will affect the village of the ocean to sustain life, and in turn the ability of the ocean to sustain people like us.
So, this is important.
