Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, 2022 Sunhak Peace Prize laureate

Dr. Pate’s Background and Experience Make Him an Excellent Fit to Lead Gavi

Not surprisingly, Dr. Pate’s appointment comes after a yearlong recruitment process personally overseen by the Chair of the Board, Professor Jose Manuel Barroso. According to Professor Barroso, Dr. Pate “stood out in a field of world-class candidates” due to his knowledge and experience of both national immunization programming and international emergency response and global finance.

Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate

During his time at the World Bank, he led the Bank’s US$18 billion Covid-19 global health response. Moreover, he represented the World Bank on various boards, including Gavi, the Global Fund, CEPI, and UNAIDS.

Sitting CEO Dr. Seth Berkley has led Gavi for more than half of its existence. One of the most significant and recent projects was co-establishing COVAX to serve countries during the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. He has also played a crucial role in expanding Gavi’s vaccine portfolio during his tenure, including for HPV, polio, cholera, and malaria. Dr. Berkley will continue to serve as CEO until August 2nd, 2023, while working with Dr. Pate to ensure a smooth transition.

In conclusion, Dr. Pate’s appointment as Gavi’s new CEO marks a new era for the organization. It has been and continues to play a crucial role in improving global health. With his vast experience in global health leadership, Dr. Pate is poised to lead Gavi to new heights and build on the impressive work accomplished under Dr. Berkley’s leadership.
