Gavi and Virchow Unite Resources for Sustainable Development

The newly formed partnership recognizes the significance of leveraging resources, sharing knowledge, and pooling expertise to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically focusing on SDG3 “Good Health and Well-Being” and SDG17 “Partnerships for the Goals,” Gavi and the Virchow Foundation are committed to collaborating in several key areas.

Marie-Ange Saraka-Yao, Managing Director of Resource Mobilisation, Private Sector Partnerships & Innovative Finance at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance: “We look forward to harnessing Germany’s growing leadership in the field of global health to support the goal of universal health coverage and vaccinating the world’s children.”

Raising Awareness and Advocacy:

Through their respective platforms and networks, Gavi and the Virchow Foundation aim to increase awareness and engage in advocacy activities concerning global and public health issues. By amplifying their voices, they aspire to mobilize support and drive positive change on a global scale.

Organizing Global Health Events:

The partnership will facilitate the organization of important meetings and key global health events, such as the annual awarding of the prestigious Virchow Prize for Global Health. These events will provide a platform for experts and stakeholders to come together, share insights, and discuss innovative solutions for improving global health equity and resilience.

Building Multi-Sectoral Partnerships:

Gavi and the Virchow Foundation will work towards uniting diverse actors and sectors that share a common goal of enhancing global health equity. By fostering multi-sectoral partnerships, they seek to strengthen health systems, improve access to quality healthcare, and promote sustainable development worldwide.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Gavi

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is the largest international cooperation mechanism that contributed to improving overall health of humanity by providing vaccination to children in low-income countries. It coordinated the COVAX Facility immediately after the coronavirus outbreak in the year 2020 to provide fair and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines in every nation across the globe, including developing countries where it is difficult to proactively secure vaccines.

The COVAX initiative to reduce vaccine disparity between high-and low-income countries aims to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to vaccines. It has greatly contributed to saving lives in low-income countries by delivering over 1 billion doses of vaccine to 144 countries as of January 2022. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance was the 2022 Sunhak Peace Prize laureate for its contributions to saving lives through vaccine equity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virchow Foundation: Harnessing Germany’s Leadership in Global Health

Germany, a long-standing supporter of global health initiatives, plays a crucial role in this partnership. As a recognized anchor donor of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, Germany’s growing leadership in the field of global health will be harnessed to support the goal of universal health coverage and ensure the vaccination of children worldwide.

Virchow Prize for Global Health

The Virchow Foundation, one of the key German institutions focused on global health, will contribute its expertise and mobilize engagement across sectors to raise awareness and drive innovative solutions through the Virchow Prize for Global Health.

Final Thoughts

Collaboration between Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Virchow Foundation for Global Health marks a significant milestone in advancing global health and achieving the United Nations Agenda 2030. By joining forces, these organizations will amplify their efforts, leverage their networks, and promote greater equity in health coverage. Together, they aim to inspire positive change, strengthen partnerships, and work towards a future where health is accessible to all. Germany’s leadership in global health will serve as a catalyst for progress. It will also ensure that universal health coverage and the well-being of future generations remain at the forefront of the global health agenda.
