UN appoints Adesina for Fight Against Malnutrition

Akinwumi Adesina

The United Nations (UN) has appointed Akinwumi Adesina to strengthen the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement. His appointment reflects his expertise in addressing global food and nutrition challenges and enhances the SUN initiative.

Adesina, a renowned Nigerian economist and former President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has a track record of advocating for agricultural development and food security. His leadership and strategic approach have garnered international recognition. In 2019, he received the Sunhak Peace Prize for his contributions to bringing great improvement to Africa’s food security.

Scaling Up Nutrition

The SUN movement focuses on combatting malnutrition and improving nutrition for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. Adesina’s appointment underscores the UN’s commitment to advancing this critical initiative and accelerating progress in global nutrition goals.

Adesina’s expertise and accomplishments in agricultural development align closely with the SUN movement’s objectives. During his tenure at the AfDB, he spearheaded initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity and eliminate hunger.

In his new role, Adesina will collaborate with governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector to drive innovation and mobilize resources to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity. His strategic guidance and advocacy will significantly contribute to scaling up efforts within the SUN movement.

Adesina’s appointment to the UN and his involvement in the SUN movement highlight his recognized expertise and dedication to addressing global nutrition challenges. His contributions will shape policies, programs, and partnerships that prioritize nutrition and improve the well-being of millions worldwide.

With Adesina’s knowledge and leadership, the UN and the SUN movement are poised to make substantial progress in combatting malnutrition and promoting sustainable food systems. Together, they will strive to ensure universal access to adequate and nutritious food.
