[2019 Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate] Poverty is not pretty
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the President of African Development Bank
I grew up as a kid, recognizing that poverty was not normal. Having gone through poverty myself.
So, when I was doing my doctoral studies in the US, and people would talk about poverty, inequality, I knew poverty was not a theory. I lived through it.
And I know poverty is not pretty and nobody wants to be poor.
So, I grew up with that as my life ambition. That’s what I wanted to do with my life, to help others, to get hundreds of, millions of people, out of poverty, to make sure that we are not transferring poverty from one generation to the others, and to make sure that we are creating hope and better life for people all the time.
