[2019 Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate] I do not want Africa to be a museum of poverty
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the President of African Development Bank
If you take a look at Africa today, five of the fastest growing economies in the world, are in Africa. If you take a look at the youngest population in the world, it’s in Africa.
If you look at the foreign direct investment of Africa, in 2010, it only 10 billion dollars. Look at it, last year, 50 billion dollars. If you look at the consumer expenditures, how people are spending money, by 2030 in Africa, it will reach 23.5 trillion dollars.
As a banker, I look at economic figures, and many people don’t realize that Africa today, you have 17 African countries that are growing at above 5%, in terms of GDP growth. That is remarkable. And you have another 21 that are growing between 3~5%.
So, Africa is resilient, Africa has a lot of riches. But, I do not want Africa to be a museum of poverty. I want Africa to be a land of prosperity.
