A supermodel who became an activist
Waris Dirie, A Human Rights Activist Who Publicized the Issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to the World
(Interviewer) So you became a model and you decide to become a human activist to fight against FGM, and you revealed your experience with FGM, so why did you decide to reveal that story to the world?
Well, it was easy, because first of all, I knew the horror of it.
Easy, because I don’t see anybody fighting this crime, so I thought I could do it.
I just really went with it and see what would happen, and I’m still here.
After 25 years, I’m still at it, but it’s good news, because there’s a lot of change since then, positive change.
From 70 percent to 7 percent now.
The world knows everything about FGM.
I expected it to be gone a long time ago, and that’s where we are at now, or where I am now.
It’s focused on education, to change things, to make an impact.
